Grand Exchange

Introduction

The Grand Exchange is a world spanning exchange market, located at the heart of Misthalin in Varrock. The exchange can be used to buy and sell most tradeable items in Runescape. Members have the ability to conduct up to six trades at a time and free to play players have the ability to conduct up to two trades at a time. The exchange has some distinctly unique features which allow for efficient trading.

  • Players can trade across worlds without having to leave their own.
  • Players can purchase large quantities of items from multiple players in only one transaction.
  • If goods are listed on the exchange the trade can still go through even if one player is offline.

The Grand Exchange is located north-west of Varrock's West Bank. (Highlighted in green)

The best ways to access the Grand Exchange are as follows:

  • Teleport to Varrock.
  • Use a Spirit tree to access the spirit tree within the Grand Exchange.
  • Teleport to the Edgeville fairy ring (DKR) and use the shortcut next to the canoe station. (21 agility required)
  • Teleport to Edgeville and use the shortcut next to the canoe station. (21 agility required)
  • Teleport to Edgeville using the Ancient Home Teleport spell and use the shortcut next to the canoe station. (21 agility required)

Getting Started

The Grand Exchange Tutor and Brugsen Bursen

In order to use the Grand Exchange you must first go through a brief tutorial. To receive this tutorial you must speak to Brugsen Bursen or the Grand Exchange Tutor, both are located on the south side of the exchange. They will run through a brief tutorial explaining how the exchange works.

Trade Experts

Trade Experts are located all around the Grand Exchange. They will be able to give you information on the most common items that are used in Runescape ranging from pure essence to dark bows. For further information, see the table below.

Expert Name Expert Picture Area of Expertise Location within Exchange
Bob Barter* Bob Herbs South-west
Relobo Blinyo Relobo Logs South-west
Hofuthand Hofuthand Armour and Weapons North-west
Farid Morrisane Farid Ores North-east
Murky Matt** Matt Runes South-west

*Note: Speak to Bob Barter to combine your (1), (2), and (3)-dose potions into (4)-dose potions. He will also split higher dose potions into lower dose potions for a small fee. This also works with calquat kegs (of ale) and barbarian potions. It is possible to combine noted potions. More information is available in the Herblore guide.

**Note: Members may speak to Murky Matt to combine the charges of their teleport jewellery (rings, necklaces, and amulets.) For example, if you have two (2)-charge items, he will combine them into one (4)-charge item.

Buying Items

When attempting to buy an item via the exchange you must have enough gp to cover the sale and you must know the exact name of the item you wish to purchase.

When finishing a trade it is possible to have some gp refunded. If the price you were willing to pay was larger than the seller's, that difference in gp will be refunded to your Collection Box.

The table below shows information about the common buttons on the exchange.

Button Picture Button Information
Increases either the quantity or price by one.
Decreases either the quantity or price by one.
Allows you to enter a custom quantity or price.
Market Plusone Increases the quantity by one.
Market Plusten Increases the quantity by ten.
Market Plushundred Increases the quantity by one hundred.
Market Plusthousand Increases the quantity by one thousand.
Sets the price to the current Grand Exchange market value.
Market Minus5 Lowers the price by 5% of the displayed value.
Market Plus5 Raises the price by 5% of the displayed value.

Items that are entered on to the exchange can be cancelled. This can only happen if they have not already been purchased. The picture below explains how the cancellation process works.

GrandExchangeCancel1

When your item has been entered onto the exchange you will see a progress bar underneath the item's description. When the progress bar turns green the item has been bought (see image below).

When the item has been bought, you then have the ability to collect it. Talk to any banker in RuneScape and choose the collect option or open the Grand Exchange interface at the Grand Exchange. Find the corresponding trade window, click on the item (highlighted in yellow) and it will appear in your inventory. Right-clicking the item gives you the option to collect it either as a note or a real item. Left-clicking the item automatically collects it as a note.

There are two exceptions to this. If the item you bought is stackable (runes, arrows, etc.) or cannot be noted, then there is no option to collect as a note and left-clicking will collect it as an item. If you have bought a single item or only one item has been bought so far, left-clicking it will also automatically withdraw it as a real item instead of a note. You can, of course, still right-click it and collect it as a note if you wish.

Collection Box

One of the more convenient aspects about the Grand Exchange is that you can collect your finished offers at any bank, whether they are items you buy or coins you receive from selling items. The Collection Box is also the place where you reclaim items you've lent out (once the time you lent them out for has passed, of course). If this time has not yet passed, it will show you the remaining time when you try to reclaim your item.

To get to your Collection Box, simply right-click a bank booth or banker and select the "Collect" option to get there.

Sets

To make trading items in the exchange much easier, a set system was introduced. For example, instead of having to buy or sell black dragonhide body, chaps and vambraces as three separate items they can be turned into a set and purchased or sold as one.

Sets that can have either legs or a skirt are denoted by (lg) for legs or (sk) for skirt.

Selling Sets

To turn armour into a set you must have all of the correct pieces in your inventory. Once you have the correct pieces speak to an exchange clerk, find the corresponding set and click "exchange". Once you have undertaken the exchange you will find that your items have disappeared and have been replaced with a set box. This set can now be sold in the exchange as one item.

Buying Sets

Once you have purchased your set from the Grand Exchange you need to convert it back into its original components, as let's face it wearing a box in combat wont help you very much. Take the box to the exchange clerk and click the "set" option. Once the exchange screen comes up, right click the set in your inventory and click "exchange". The box should now be replaced with the set items.

The table below shows all the possible sets and what their components are.
